Why we called it
Quietly one of the best flips of the summer — and a perfect example of why the details matter. Lidl stocked two versions of the Black+Decker 3-in-1 air conditioner, and to the casual eye they were identical. The difference was one letter on the box: the GBL model number, marking the WiFi-enabled version.
Our alert flagged exactly that. Members who checked the model number and grabbed the WiFi unit at £199 watched it climb to £494–600 on the resale market as the heatwave emptied every shelf in the country. The non-WiFi version did fine; the GBL did the big numbers.
The edge
What members knew before everyone else worked it out.
- Two nearly identical models on the shelf — the alert told members which one carried the margin.
- Smart/WiFi functionality made this the premium listing in a sold-out market.
- £199 in, £494–600 confirmed out — roughly 2.5–3x retail.
- Named Drop of the Week in the Vault Weekly after the sales data landed.
How it played out
- 28 Jun
Called in the AC sweep
The heatwave playbook flags the Black+Decker alongside the Tronic — with a specific note to check for the WiFi (GBL) model number.
- 1–4 Jul
Sell-through everywhere
Retailers nationwide sell out of portable AC. In-store checkers help members find the last units on shelves.
- 6 Jul
Drop of the week
Confirmed sales print £494–600 for the WiFi model. The Vault Weekly crowns it drop of the week.
The takeaway
Anyone can spot an air conditioner in a heatwave. Knowing which of two identical-looking boxes resells for £100 more is the kind of detail that pays for a membership many times over in one trip.
