Why we called it
There is a pattern in the US right now of technology companies launching lifestyle lines, and OpenAI took it further than most: a clothing range alongside a physical device, designed with Jony Ive and built with keyboard makers Work Louder. The Codex Micro is a hardware controller for ChatGPT agents. It sold out immediately at £170.
We called it while it was already out of stock, which sounds useless until you consider what the call actually was: get the monitor armed now, because the restock is the entire opportunity. The estimate at the time was £600 or more. Ten days later a confirmed eBay sale landed at exactly £600, with a second running at £650 across twenty bids.
The edge
What members knew before everyone else worked it out.
- Called sold-out, with monitors armed for the restock rather than a cop nobody could make.
- £170 retail against a £600 confirmed sale — roughly 3.5x, before a second at £650.
- The widening argument: someone hacking it to work with other assistants pushes the buyer pool well past OpenAI's own customers.
- Customs duties flagged up front for UK and EU buyers, since the device ships from the US.
- Restocks did land, and the monitor caught them — thin stock, but real.
How it played out
- 18 Jul
Called while sold out
Posted with a £600+ estimate and monitors going up, on the basis that the restock is the play, not the launch.
- 24 Jul
Restocks land
Small restocks come through and the monitor pings them. A live auction sits at roughly £300 with six days still to run.
- 30 Jul
The number confirms
A completed eBay sale prints £600, with another at £650 across twenty bids. The original estimate holds exactly.
The takeaway
The honest caveat we posted alongside the first auction — that a live bid is a trajectory, not a settled sale — is why the confirmation matters. The estimate was £600+. It sold for £600.
