Why we called it

OP-17 is the One Piece Card Game's 4th Anniversary set and it streets on 28 August. Sealed booster boxes were already trading at £300 to £350 on eBay against a £110 to £119.75 retail before a single copy had legitimately reached a UK shelf. That is roughly £220 a box.

This one was flagged in the drops hub a month or two before release, which is the part that matters on One Piece. The money on these sets is made at pre-order and on release morning, not afterwards, because by the time the set is generally available you are paying resale like everyone else.

The route in is in-store, the same shape as the Pokémon cooks. Waterstones branches were stocking up for the 28th with purchase limits varying by store, and local card shops were expected to carry it. The instruction that went with it was blunt: ring now, not on the day. Anyone phoning on release morning is behind the people who reserved on the Wednesday.

The edge

What members knew before everyone else worked it out.

  • £110-119.75 sealed against £300-350, so roughly £190-220 a box.
  • Streets 28 August, the same day as the Entertainer and Tesco Pokémon route, so one morning covers both.
  • Waterstones confirmed as stocking with per-store purchase limits. Local card shops expected to carry it too.
  • Ring your store the day before rather than on release morning. Reservations go to people who called early.
  • Originally flagged a month or two ahead in the ongoing-drops channel, which is where the One Piece calls always start.

How it played out

#misc-alerts · call log
  1. 4 Aug

    Pre-order heads-up

Posted with Dragon Ball as a pair: online pre-orders first, in-store cook after, with alerts armed on both.

  2. 24 Aug

    Priced in the weekly

Listed as a Friday cop at £119.75 to £340, around £220 a box, on the same day as the big Pokémon route.

  3. 25 Aug

    In-store plan published

Sealed comps confirmed at £300-350, Waterstones flagged as stocking, and members told to ring locals that day rather than on the 28th.

The takeaway

One Piece keeps rewarding the same behaviour: know the set months out, then treat release day as an in-store job rather than an online one. The people who rang on the Tuesday will have boxes. The people who refresh a website on Friday morning will not.
